Major League Soccer (MLS) is the top-tier professional soccer league in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1993 with its first season in 1996, MLS currently has 30 teams (29 in the US and 3 in Canada: Vancouver, Portland, Toronto). The league is continuously expanding with a target of 32 teams. MLS is known for its multiculturalism, growing popularity, and infrastructure development.
Founding History
MLS was founded in 1993 as part of US soccer reform. The inaugural season in 1996 featured 10 teams. The league faced challenges early on but began stable growth in the early 2000s. After the 2002 World Cup, soccer's influence in the US increased and MLS grew stronger.
Competition Structure
MLS regular season runs from February to October, with each team playing 34 matches. 15 teams in each conference, top 7 qualify for playoffs. The playoffs use a single elimination format including knockout rounds, semifinals, and finals. MLS Cup Final decides the champion, usually held at the regular season leader's home.
League Expansion
MLS has been rapidly expanding. St. Louis City SC joined in 2023, San Diego FC in 2024. Planned expansions include teams from São Paulo, Brazil. The league targets 32 teams, making it one of the largest professional soccer leagues in the world.
Designated Player Rule
